Tips to deal with Gingivitis


Gingivitis is a common gum problem that has affected millions of people. Gums that get infected with this disease become swollen, sensitive and they bleed easily. If you suffer from gingivitis, even small stimuli like brushing your teeth or eating a hard substance can lead to bleeding. This gum disease is considered the prelude to periodontal disease that can affect the root of teeth and the tissues that surround the neck.

If you are one of those that suffer from this problem, here are a few simple tips that can help you:

Keep your Teeth Clean

Studies have shown that one of the main causes of gingivitis is poor hygiene and unclean teeth. You must brush your teeth at least twice a day to prevent gum problems. When brushing your teeth, focus on cleaning you gum line, as this is place where plaques form easily which can lead to gingivitis. Choose your toothpaste wisely, as not all toothpastes have ingredients required to keep your teeth healthy. Ideally, you must use toothpaste that contains peppermint and sage oil.

You must also floss your teeth regularly to remove the leftover food that gets stuck in between your teeth. This cannot be removed by normal brushing, so make sure you floss your teeth after brushing.

Increase the intake of Vitamin C

Vitamin C is essential to maintain the health of your teeth. If your gums are bleeding, vitamin C will act as a natural antibiotic and boost the healing process. Vitamin C also helps in keeping the gums healthy and protects them from gingivitis. Some of the natural sources of vitamin C include citrus fruits, guava, tomatoes, and mangoes. Studies have shown that broccoli helps in preventing bacterial infection that is caused due to inflammation of gums.

Gargling

To prevent the spread of gingivitis, you must gargle with a solution of salt and water for at least 30 seconds every day. To make this solution, mix one spoon salt with 100 ml warm water and stir until the salt dissolves. You can also prevent gingivitis from spreading by gargling with mouthwash for at least 30 seconds every day.

Solution of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide

You can make this solution buy mixing baking soda with little water and adding 20ml hydrogen peroxide to it. This mixture will form a paste that you put in your brush and brush your teeth. This will prevent bacterial plaque from spreading with will prevent the growth of gingivitis. You can brush your teeth twice a week with the mixture of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide.

Stop Smoking

Yet another side effect of smoking is that it promotes the growth of gingivitis. When you smoke, the immune system of the body becomes weak which can trigger the growth of bacteria in the mouth. So avoid smoking if you want to keep your teeth healthy.

Visit your dentist

You must visit your dentist at least once in six months to get your teeth examined and find out the possible problems you can face. Your dentist will also suggest a few steps you can take to keep your teeth healthy. Visiting a dentist becomes even more important if you are suffering from gingivitis.
